Dinosaurs may have been extinct for over 65 million years, but the public’s fascination with these leathery lizards is still as strong as ever. Despite being widely popularized in movies, documentaries and children’s books though, these beastly behemoths have rarely been featured in video games in their true form. Though a few franchises do spring to mind Turok, Monster Hunter and the Dino Crisis series. Dinosaurs have largely been swept under the mountains in favour of manonman first-person shooters, zombie-infested action adventures and quirky platformers.
Primal Carnage: Extinction looks to address that void with a multiplayer-only, humans versus dinosaurs combat game that doesn’t shy away from bringing some of the most ferocious breeds of dinosaur to life. Currently available on Windows PC and PlayStation 4, Primal Carnage: Extinction takes players to an abandoned island where these prehistoric creatures roam freely among the jungles, forests and valleys. The asymmetrical design means that players can step into the shoes of a mercenary in an attempt to wipe out the species, or charge into the role of a dinosaur and stomp, chomp and crush its human opponents into submission.

Each faction is split into various classes, giving players a level of freedom to experiment, or the option to stick to their favourite playstyles, with each offering its own set of attributes and special attacks. Fly around as a Pteranodon, for example, and you can pick up humans and send them falling to their death, or charge around as a Carnotaurus and you’ll be ramming enemies at high speed. Players can choose from a creature roster that spans five classes (Predators, Flyers, Spitters, Tyrants and Chargers) and use their various strengths to tactically help out the team to wipe out mankind.
Playing as the human faction adopts the first-person shooter style and offers five classes, including: Commando, Pyromaniac, Trapper, Scientist and Pathfinder. With the likes of heavy ammo specialists, fastfiring trappers, sniper experts and flamesaw-wielding mercenaries, there’s a range of tactical options available and gadgets to help in battle, including mines, medkits and ammo resupply packs.
Teamwork and strategy is vital with eight players in each faction tearing each other apart in a fast-paced, action-packed, multiplayer bloodbath across various game modes, including Team Deathmatch, Get to the Chopper (objective-based) and Survival. With the likes of the man-eating Tyrannosaurus Rex on the prowl, which can swallow enemies whole, and the beefy machine gun-wielding commando looking to stop predators dead in their tracks, Primal Carnage: Extinction delivers a strategic, action-packed battle of man versus dinosaur that should really get the adrenaline flowing for fans of our thundering ancestors.
