Cygames President Koichi Watanbe has revealed during the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu that the company’s Project Awakening is still in the works, despite the fact that it’s been eight years since it was announced.
Development [on Project Awakening] is, of course, steadily progressing. What I can say at the moment is that it is ‘really starting to take shape.’ Everyone on the team is working each day with a real sense of confidence that things are coming together.
When asked if the style of Project Awakening has changed since its 2018 showing, he responded, “If you’re asking, ‘Is it exactly the same?,’ I’d say it’s a little different. The overall direction remains largely the same, but as development has progressed, we’ve continued polishing it by adding new elements here and there with the thought of, ‘Let’s add something new like this.’”
At this point we can assume that Project Awakening has shifted to the PS5, or at the very least a cross-generation release. The game’s Kenichiro Takaki previously stated that the game is an open-world affair that combines elements of RPG and high fantasy, with a main focus on combat alongside multiplayer co-op elements. Back in September 2018, Cygames named Junji Tago and Ryosuke Aiba as Project Awakening’s director and producer, respectively.
