PS Vita Game of the Month: May 2012

Before we go head-on into next week’s big event, E3, I’m going to cover the PlayStation Vita titles of May. Unlike last month, when the only strong choice was Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, this month delivers a much more challenging competition.

First, I’ll start with the port of NetherRealm’s popular fighter remake Mortal Kombat. This game in portable form holds all of the magical and gory aspects that the console version had. Included in this compact combatant is a special section devoted to the functionalities of the PS Vita, such as the gyroscope and the touchscreens.

The other big title this month is none other than Resistance: Burning Skies. Burning Skies includes a full story that ties very well into the already-existing lore in the Resistance series. To top it all off, it has the multiplayer that gamers have come to expect from first-person shooters.

Now, to make the choice: Mortal Kombat or Resistance: Burning Skies?

We at PSU collectively chose Resistance: Burning Skies.

Nihilistic Games has truly come through for the PlayStation Vita, giving gamers the true first-person shooter handheld experience with two joysticks. Even if the game has a primitive look to it in comparison to modern shooters, it truly boasts the core components that have driven gamers to the genre since the times of Doom and GoldenEye. Even more impressive is the full online experience that’s included. Those who have heard about online connection issues don’t be hindered. The game has been patched, and the online components to Burning Skies are fully accessible and incredibly entertaining.

Here’s a tidbit of what our very own Michael Harradence thought of Burning Skies in the PSU review:

“Overall, Resistance: Burning Skies isn’t quite the triple-A FPS that you might have hoped for, but it’s bloody close. If anything, this game proves this game proves that the genre can translate to PS Vita and bring a console-like experience to a handheld, and for that alone it’s worth experiencing.”
