Sony has detailed the PlayStation VR’s cinematic mode, which allows users to view a virtual screen of up to 226 inches.
The hardware giant said this is akin to viewing your games while sitting in the front row of a movie theatre. Three simulated viewing sizes are available with cinematic mode: 117 inches, 163 inches, and the aforementioned 226 inches.
According to a translation of a post on the Japanese PlayStation Blog (via Engadget), the standard PS VR cinematic mode screen will encompass your entire field of view, while the 226-inch option requires you to move your head in order to see everything on offer.
In addition, the smallest size available will reorients the screen to your head movement, and it will match your horizontal perspective if you lay down when wearing the headset, which Sony outlined as an option if you are feeling tired using PS VR.
PS VR release date confirmed for October 2016
Sony announced during its E3 2016 press conference that PS VR will be released in the U.S. and U.K. on October 13, 2016, priced at $399.99/£349.99. Sony hopes to have around 50 games out for the device by the end of 2016.
Around 230 developers are currently developing games for PS VR, with a number of major titles already confirmed to support the headset, such a Ace Combat 7, Gran Turismo Sport, Dreams, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Tekken 7.
Sony’s upcoming virtual reality headset boasts a 5.7 inch OLED panel, and is compatible with the DualShock 4 and PlayStation Move controllers. The device comes packaged with an external processing unit that enables Social Screen video output to your TV, and features an RGB sub-pixel matrix resolution of 1080p.
PS VR was originally announced at GDC 2014 under the working title of Project Morpheus, and competes with both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Even back then, Sony had pledged to ensure that the device would be ‘affordable‘ for its consumers.
