PS3 growth to surpass Xbox 360 this year, says Activision

Speaking in a conference call following Activision Blizzard’s third-quarter earnings, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said that he expects PlayStation 3 sales growth to surpass the Xbox 360 in both North America and Europe this year.

Griffith said that he expects the PS3 to sell an estimated eight million consoles in 2008, outselling the Xbox 360 by one-two million units.

Griffith’s predictions are as follows:

“Handhelds” – 24 million units (DS and PSP)
– Wii – 15 million
– PS3 – 8 million units
– Xbox 360 – 6-7 million units

With 2008 having been touted as the ‘year of the PS3’, it is unsurprising that Griffith should predict such an auspicious sales forecast for Sony’s high-spec black box.
