PS4 has shipped 37.7 million units worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has announced that it has sold-in (i.e. shipped to retailers) approximately 37.7 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide.

The figure comes in light of the company’s second quarter financial results, which ended December 30, 2015.

Sales of PS4 hardware and software contributed to a 10.5 percent year-on-year increase in net sales for Sony’s Game and Network division, although this was partially offset by a slump in PS3 performance.

Sony’s current-generation consoles sold through 8.4 million units during the second quarter, an increase of two million during the same period last year. Sony now plans to sell 39.9 million PS4s by March 31, 2016.

The PS4 launched in November 2013 alongside the Xbox One from Microsoft, and has gone on to achieve a significant lead over its rival. In fact, Microsoft has admitted that it may never catch up to Sony’s machine going forward, while analyst Michael Pachter believes there is nothing Xbox One can do to beat its rival.

Back in early January, Sony confirmed that PS4 had sold 35.9 million units worldwide following a sucessful holiday period that resulted in the console selling 5.7 million between November and December.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever," said Andrew House, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI). "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences."

Sony is gearing up for its biggest year for PS4 yet, with a number of high-profile games due for release including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, No Man’s Sky, The Last Guardian, Ratchet & Clank, The Witness, and more.
