Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that PlayStation 4 has sold a staggering 18.5 million units worldwide.
Posted on PlayStation Japan’s official website and continuing its ascendency as the fastest-selling Sony console ever, PS4 has comfortably rode into the New Year with the very same momentum which saw it claim the crown of 2014’s best-selling console, despite a few hiccups along the way.
Given its mandatory status for online use, Sony’s PlayStation Plus service has also reached a plateau of 10.9 million subscriptions – a number which, while impressive, perhaps seems a little lower than anticipated given the fact that gamers need an active membership to play their games online.
From a software perspective, it’s also been revealed that 81.8 million games have been purchased for the system, giving a healthy ratio of (on average) 4.42 games to every PS4 sold. It’s unclear, however, whether or not PlayStation Plus’ Instant Game Collection factors into the tally but it’s impressive numbers nonetheless.
With the likes of From Software’s Bloodborne and indeed Naughty Dog’s latest entry in the Uncharted series to come this year, the future’s looking extremely bright for PlayStation.
