PS4 Neo praised by EA, says a mid-cycle refresh is ‘great for the industry’

Sony and Microsoft’s planned mid-cycle refresh with PlayStation 4 and Xbox Scorpio will prove highly auspicious for publishers and the industry as a whole, reckons Peter Moore, Chief Operating Officer for Electronic Arts.

Speaking during an interview with Eurogamer at Gamescom 2016 this week, Moore, who has previously worked at SEGA and Microsoft overseeing the Dreamcast and Xbox, respectively, made it clear the publishing behemoth is fully supporting of the new hardware.

We’ve been very public about how supportive we are for Sony and Microsoft’s plans for Neo and Scorpio,” said Moore. “

From my experience of having to launch two platforms and planning for a long life cycle – first parties have so much to cater for now. Getting ready for 4K, getting ready for VR, this kind of mid-cycle refresh is great for the industry, great for publishers like ourselves, great for developers to get some more tools, more power. I’m nowhere near any of that in my new job, but that’s what I’m seeing.”

PS4 Neo release date still up in the air

Rumors of a revamped PS4 have been doing the rounds since early 2016, although it wasn’t until the week before E3 that Sony officially confirmed the existence of the PS4 Neo. The system will not act as a replacement for the existing model, but will offer a number of enhancements, including improved visual fidelity for software.

No release date for the PS4 Neo has been confirmed as of yet, and reports have suggested that the system may be released in late 2016, while others put it out in spring 2017. As for Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft has said it will launch the new machine in holiday 2017.
