PS4 sales hit 3.5 million during Sony’s most recent quarter

Sony has announced that PlayStation 4 sold over 3.5 million units during the period April-June 2016, marking an increase of more than half-a-million over the same period last year.

PS4 has now shipped over 40 million units worldwide since its release in November 2013, although an exact figure has yet to be confirmed.

Sony said earlier this year that it has forecast sales of 20 million PS4 units in the period April 2016 – March 2017, meaning it still has over 16 million consoles to flog in order to hit its ambitious target. This would bring life-to-date sales of the console to over 60 million.

Sadly there’s no official word on how PS4 measures up against the Xbox One, as Microsoft hasn’t divulged any raw figures for its current-generation system since November 2014. We do know, however, that PS4 is comfortable in the lead.

PS4 Neo release date still to be determined

Sony confirmed in the week prior to E3 that it is indeed working on an upgraded version of the PS4, codenamed the Neo. The system is expected to co-exist with the regular model and provides gamers with increased visual fidelity among other enhanced features.

While an official release date for PS4 Neo has yet to be announced, rumors have suggested it may launch before October this year. However, other reports suggest that it won’t see the light of day until March 2017

Elsewhere, Sony confirmed the PS VR release date during its E3 2016 presentation back in June, confirming the virtual reality headset will be unleashed upon the public on October 13, 2016. The device will set you back $399.99/£349.99.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida this week said that all PS VR games will function with the original PS4 console, so there’s no need to purchase a Neo in order to get the full PS VR experience.
