PS4 tops one million sales in Japan

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has sold over one million units in Japan, the latest Media Create data has revealed (via NeoGAF).

The console sold 42,216 during the period ended January 4, finally propelling sales past the one million mark.

This means the system achieved the milestone in less than a year (10 months to be more precise), with PS4 having launched in Japan in February 2014. By comparison, PS3 managed to top one million sales in its native country in around nine months.

PS4 has been a bit of a slow burner in Japan, though in the U.S. and Europe, it has achieved massive success, bringing worldwide sales to 18.5 million and staying firmly ahead of its leading competitor, the Xbox One.

Quite how the system will perform in Japan going forward remains to be seen, as consumers are slowly being seduced by smartphones. Nonetheless, PS4 has a great lineup for 2015, so fingers crossed.
