PlayStation 4 will see more games hitting the buttery-smooth 60fps mark as developers become more familiar with the system’s architecture, former PlayStation executive Shahid Kamal Ahmad has said.
Speaking with GamingBolt, Ahmad, who served as Director of Strategic Content for the console giant, reiterated his stance on prioritizing frame rate over resolution; something that developers have seldom attempted for the current generation.
However, he remained confident that will change in the future, with 60fps becoming more the industry standard.
“Ha! You never know what people will latch onto,” said Ahmad, referring to an earlier Tweet. “My Twitter account is my personal account. I’ve expressed opinions there that aren’t company policy. It’s not actually the first time I’ve tweeted that funnily enough. 60fps has always been my personal preference and I’m sure many gamers would prefer a game that runs at 60fps than at 30fps or even slower, so I stand by my preference for sure!
“I remember tweeting something else, more work related about how you’d be hearing about 1080p and 60fps a lot more often this generation, and that has certainly proven to be the case. As devs become more familiar with the PS4 hardware I’m sure you’ll see even more.”
A number of major PS4 games have traded frame rate for resolution, including Bloodborne and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Naughty Dog originally suggested that all of its current-gen offerings would clock in at 60fps, though as it turns out, Uncharted 4’s campaign will run at 30fps while the multiplayer will instead perform at 60fps.
Sony has a major year lined up, with Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo Sport, Dreams and The Last Guardian all hitting stores in 2016. Furthermore, the company will also release PlayStation VR in October, priced at $399/£349.
