PS5 Is Now Ahead Of The PS3 In US Lifetime Installed Base

Circana’s Mat Piscatella has revealed in a post on BlueSky that the PS5 has now eclipsed the lifetime installed base of the PS3 in the US as of September 2025.

Elsewhere, Piscatella revealed that the PS5 has been ahead of PS4 on a time aligned basis in the US for a ‘very long time,’ with Sony’s latest home console ahead of its predecessor by around 4.6% as of September 2025.

The PS3 was originally released in the US and Japan in November 2006, before arriving in Europe in Spring 2007. The console struggled in comparison to its predecessor in terms of commercial performance, partly due to its high price point on release, and was something of a slow burner. The PS3 was also notoriously tricky to develop for due to its Cell architecture, which resulted in some poor third-party ports in comparison to the Xbox 360.

Meanwhile, the PS5 arrived in November 2020 and has been re-released twice already in the form of the PS5 Slim and the PS5 Pro, the latter capable of offering improved frame rates and visuals over the standard model.
