The NPD Group has revealed in its February 2021 hardware and software report that the Sony PS5 is now the fastest-selling games system in North America. The console only launched in November 2020, and has been incredibly hard to get hold of since, so that’s a pretty big accomplishment.
The feat is based on US dollar sales during its first four months on the market across the pond. What we don’t know at this point is just how well the PS5 is tracking ahead of the Xbox Series X/S, but Microsoft is being typically coy on releasing any hardware figures of its own.
However, the PS5 still had to put up with second place in February 2021 behind the Nintendo Switch, which continues to sell like hot cakes for years after its launch.
Overall, February 2021 was a bumper month for hardware, with spending jumping by 35% year-on-year, totalling 4.6 billion dollars.
Sony recently announced that the PS5 had sold 4.5 million units in 2020, a figure that has surely jumped a fair amount in the past couple of months.
In terms of software for the same month, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales holds firm at number four on the all format charts, which was dominated by Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War and Persona 5 Strikers.
