Speaking during an interview with Digital Foundry, Sony’s Mark Cerny and Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald have revealed that developers utilising the PS5 Pro are able to adopt new versions of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) based on preference.
From a developer perspective, I think we can look at our games differently a lot of the time. I know some of our developers would say I don’t want the system to touch what I’ve confirmed, looks good to me and players, and other developers could say ‘oh, you’re system’s going to go and make my game look better for people without me having to do anything, so great.’

PSSR is one of the biggest selling points of the PS5 Pro, and is an AI-powered upscaling technique that vastly improves the visual fidelity of compatible software. Many of these games are part of the PS5 Pro Enhanced label, which require an update from the developer in order to implement these additional features. However, the PS5 Pro is still capable of improving the performance of games using the Game Boost feature, which doesn’t require a patch.
Sony launched the PS5 Pro in early November 2024 and the console has been performing strongly in the US and UK despite its high price tag, accounting for 26% of all PS5 sales in the UK during its launch month.
In related news, Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced a collaboration with AMD known as Project Amethyst, which looks set to define the architecture of its next-generation console.
