PS5 Pro May Not Be Enough To Push GTA VI To 60 FPS, Says Digital Foundry

A recent interview with Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter has suggested that the PS5 Pro, even with all its added technical muscle under the hood, may not be enough to run Grand Theft Auto VI at 60 FPS.

The DF technical editor revealed that the the issue comes down to the CPU itself, as the PS5 Pro utilises the same one as its standard counterpart.

Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30 FPS or lower. The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60 FPS if the base PS5 version is targeting 30 FPS.

This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem. Of course, all bets are off if Rockstar is targeting 60 FPS on the standard PS5 – but we’ve seen no evidence so far to suggest it is.

The PS5 Pro offers a number of improvements over existing titles thanks to its PS5 Pro Enhanced label, promising spruced up visuals and frame rate. However, The Verge’s Tom Warren notes that this doesn’t guarantee 60 FPS, and as such there will still be games that run at 30 FPS on PS5 Pro.

Sony is reportedly hoping to have around 40-50 PS5 Pro Enhanced games for launch, and will include a variety of first and third-party games.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release in Fall 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
