One of the main goals with PS5 Pro is to remove the decision between fidelity and performance modes, says lead architect Mark Cerny.
Speaking during the announcement video for Sony’s new high-end console, Cerny revealed that around 75% of players on PS5 opted for frame rate over visual fidelity, but the more powerful PS5 Pro should go a long way in having to remove that choice, or make it easier at the least.
Creators have made amazing use of the hardware capabilities, but when I talk to them I do hear about their desire for more graphics performance. The dreams of the developers are bigger than can be supported at 60 FPS, and that leads to an aspect of modern gaming that we’re all familiar with: graphics modes. It can be a difficult choice for players.

Speaking of the fidelity and performance modes, Cerny conceded that “chopper” visuals and “less responsible” controls are often encountered in fidelity mode, while the 60 FPS seen in performance mode comes at a cost to visual fidelity. However, “removing that decision, or at least narrowing that divide is one of the key target for PlayStation 5 Pro.”
The PS5 Pro is pencilled in for a November 7, 2024 release and will retail for $699.99/£699.99. Sony is not offering a disc-based version of the console, so if you want to use physical media, you’ll have to fork out extra cash for the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive.
One of the biggest features of the new system is the improvements being made to existing titles via the PS5 Pro Enhanced label, with Sony hoping to have 40-50 of these ready for launch.
