PS5 Pro Uses Next-Gen AMD Ray Tracing That Doesn’t Feature In Any Current AMD GPUs

It might be easy to get sticker shock from the PS5 Pro price tag and doubt that it actually makes any improvement over the PS5, but even before getting it into our hands we can say that PlayStation is pushing things forward with the PS5 Pro.

That’s because according to Mark Cerny in an interview with CNET, the PS5 Pro features technology from AMD that is not, in fact, featured anywhere else in its GPUs. This new tier of GPU from AMD was made possible in part due to Sony pushing for it.

“PS5 Pro uses the new advanced [ray tracing] feature sets that AMD created as the next step in their roadmap architecture,” Cerny said.

“But if you look around, there are no other AMD GPUs that use it yet. We motivated the development, and I’m very happy we did so — the response from the developers has been extraordinarily great.”

Currently, with the PS5 Pro only just having been officially revealed it’s difficult to really pin down how it improves on what the PS5 can already do.

It’ll be interesting to see what improvements we see, when the console is in public hands and people begin their own tests.
