Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has offered his two pence as to when we’re likely to see the PS5 release date.
Speaking on Episode 77 of The 1099 via SoundCloud, Pachter said that Sony is probably going to play the waiting game for now and see what happens with Microsoft’s upcoming Scorpio console, although noted the uptake of 4K TV is likely to be the biggest decider on when we’ll see the PS5.
PS5 release date predicted
“You know, I think Sony’s probably going to wait and see what happens with the Scorpio, and if the Scorpio puts pressure on them and if it’s really that much better, maybe they’ll accelerate. But you know, back to my 4K TV thing, I don’t see 4K broadcast until 2020, and I think 4K broadcast is what’s going to cause people to switch their TVs over. So, I think that’s a good time to launch a new console.”
In addition, Pachter also feels that platform holders going forward want to ensure backwards compatibility is a main feature of new hardware. In this respect, he said that “every piece of software [on PS5] will have to work on the PS4 Pro.”
Sony launched the PS4 in November 2013 and has sold over 53 million units worldwide to date, putting it comfortably ahead of the Xbox One. Last November, the console maker released the PS4 Pro, an upgraded version of its flagship system that allows for improved visuals, frame rate, and 4K resolution. The original PS4 model has now also been replaced by the PS4 Slim.
