News PlayStation 6 PS6 PS6 Memory Costs Sony

PS6 Memory Components Will Cost Sony Over $680, According To Insider

Hardware insider Kepler_L2 has claimed that the PS6 memory components alone will cost Sony more than $680 painting a pretty grim picture for the eventual retail price for the next-generation console.

Speaking in a post on NeoGAF, the tipster stated that “RAM + NAND alone” will cost Sony over $680, noting that when the format holder finalised the design of PS6 these costs were notably lower. Memory prices have spike massively in recent years due to shortages brought on by AI data centres, resulting in price increases for various consumer electronic devices, including PS5 and PS5 Pro.

Earlier this year, Kepler_LA stated that the PS6 costs Sony roughly $960 to manufacture due to an increase in the Bill of Materials (BoM), which they previously claimed was sitting at around $760. At the time, Kepler_L2 speculated that Sony’s new console could retail for about $699.99.

Back in August, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki made it clear that the console maker has yet to decide on a release date for the PS6. Analyst Piers Harding-Rolls stated in July that Sony’s announcement that will be ending production of physical game discs “almost certainly guarantees that the PS6 won’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest.” He also believes that the new console will not feature a disc drive as standard, but noted an add-on could be released “to play older PS4 and PS56 games on disc.”

The PS6 is heavily rumoured to be launching alongside a handheld device that is known internally as Canis, with updated specs provided by Kepler_L2 available to see here.
