PSA: You Probably Shouldn’t Put PS5 Discs Into Your PS4

Here at PSU some of us are having to wait to try out their PS5 games, as the console doesn’t release in Europe until next week, but our games are already arriving. Well, when trying to test out how PS4 to PS5 upgrades work, we tried to insert a Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5 disc into our PS4, to see if the PS4 would be able to read the PS5 disc and grant us access to the PS4 version of the game.

The answer? It couldn’t read the disc and it actually got jammed in our PS4 and we couldn’t eject it. The PS4 kept trying to read the PS5 disc for Miles Morales, but it couldn’t, which meant that when you hit the eject button nothing would happen. As expected, panic ensued, but luckily, the PS4 and PS4 Pro has a manual eject screw in the bottom of the console, just next to the foot shaped like the Circle button. So, our Miles disc made it out alive.

Either way, you probably shouldn’t try putting your PS5 discs into your PS4 as although there is a way to get it out, they won’t be read by the system and therefore are virtually useless. The only way to get the free version of a PS4 game when you buy a physical PS5 disc is to put that disc into your PS5 and play it on your PS5. You can’t play the PS4 version on a PS4 if you have a PS5 disc.

The PS5 is available now in the US and on November 19, 2020, in the UK and EU.
