Yesterday, the PlayStation Network was offline with users unable to access some services for over 10 hours. Though no explanation has been given for the PSN outage, Sony has confirmed that it will be offering some compensation for the downtime.
In a short statement from the official PlayStation Twitter account, the company thanks PSN users for their patience during the outage and says that it will be offering extensions to PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now subscriptions, as well as increasing video rental periods for those affected. Sony will issue details about the compensation packages in due course.
Thanks for your patience today – stay tuned for details on PS Plus, PS Now, and video rental extensions.

The cause of the outage is currently unknown, though we’d suspect that Sony may shed more light on the subject when it reveals the finer details on its compensation plan for affected users.
This isn’t the first time that users have been compensated by Sony. In 2011, 70 million PlayStation Network accounts were compromised following an attack on the service by hackers, and Sony offered free games to users as compensation. Though reasons for yesterday’s downtime are yet to be revealed, it isn’t believed that hackers were involved.
Stay tuned for more information as we get it.
