PSVR sales to hit 2.6 million by end of 2016, says research firm

Research firm SuperData has predicted that PlayStation VR will drum up some impressive sales by the end of 2016.

PSVR sales to hit over 2.5 million by end of the year

Speaking in its latest report this week (via GI.biz), the company forecast sales of 2.6 million for Sony’s upcoming virtual reality gaming headset by the end of the year, making it far away the most successful VR product out this year. By comparison, rival platforms HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have currently not pulled in as many punters as one would have perhaps expected.

In fact, Sony’s only major competitor in this space will apparently come in the shape of Gear VR from Samsung, which is expected to move around 2.3 million units.

PSVR is scheduled for release worldwide on October 13, 2016. Sony hopes to have around 50 games out for the device by the end of the year, and has already notched up some great support for the headset—over 230 developers are working on games for the device.

Aside from a number of made-from-the-ground-up titles for PSVR, such as Batman Arkham VR, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and DriveClub VR, Sony’s new device also has support from various third-party titles such as Resident Evil 7: biohazard, Final Fantasy 15, and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

In terms of price, PSVR remains by far the most competitively priced headset on the market. The device will retail for $399/£349, putting it significantly cheaper than the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, which come in at $799/$599, respectively.
