Today, SideQuest Studios CEO Marcus Pukropski reported on the PlayStation Blog that the indie RPG Rainbow Skies will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita next year.
Developed by SideQuest Studios, Rainbow Skies is an “indirect sequel” to the critically acclaimed game Rainbow Moon, which was released last year. Rainbow Skies has been in development for over a year, and the final product will largely be the result of fan feedback from the previous game.
The setting of Rainbow Skies is an entirely new universe. It spans between two parallel worlds and is filled with new characters, new monsters, and a story entirely independent from the first entry. Not only has SideQuest revamped the narrative and world setting for Rainbow Skies, it has been upgraded mechanically as well:
“Rainbow Skies is more than just a sequel. We’ll be introducing many new features, including monster taming, an advanced battle system with new combo attacks, new dungeon action elements, a new dialogue and emoticon system, new treasure hunt quests, an improved side quest system, explorable buildings, and new mini games.”
Following this lengthy list of new content and features, Pukropski reassures fans of the first game that “we’re absolutely staying true to our roots,” meaning that the core elements of Rainbow Moon will still be present in Rainbow Skies. Turn-based battles, free world exploration, dungeon exploration, and deep character development are all returning along with “lots of optional goodies,” including cross-play functionality between the PS3 and PS Vita.
