Red Faction dev surprised more games don’t include terrain destruction

Volition’s Tim Boone has admitted he’s surprised more developers don’t incorporate terrain destruction in their games, believing the feature affords a far more immersive gameplay experience.

Chatting with NowGamer, Boone used Call of Duty as an example of a triple-A franchise that’s still tip-toeing around the inclusion of destructible elements.

"We’ll play a game like Black Ops which is awesome – we’re enjoying the hell out of it – but we get to the scene when these guys are hiding in this fort and our natural reaction is [to] pull out the bazooka [and] shoot at it… and nothing happens. Of course nothing happens, it’s not that kind of game!" he commented.

"But then I think to myself ‘Imagine if they could do that?’ It’d be so much more immersive if they could do that sort of thing, so I genuinely am surprised that they haven’t done more."

Of course, Red Faction’s the poster boy this generation as far as terrain destruction goes, with the latest entry, Armageddon, featuring a myriad of ways to shatter the surrounding landscape.
