A list of games posted on Nvidia’s Ansel compatibility page has seemingly outed the existence of Red Faction Evolution, presumably the next chapter in the terrain-destroying shooter franchise that has been on hiatus for eight years now. Well, that’s if you’re not counting the brilliantly-titled Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered Edition, that is.
Red Faction Evolution Leaked, But When Is It Released?
Unsurprisingly, there’s absolutely no details right now on Red Faction Evolution, as officially, it hasn’t been announced. The listing itself has also vanished, although it was snapped by Metacouncil forum users and verified by PC Gamer, so we know it’s the real deal. The leak simply confirmed that Red Faction Evolution is supported by Ansel.
Red Faction Evolution could very well be one of the huge number of games that THQ Nordic has up its sleeves, and it’s certainly due for a revival any time soon. Red Faction Armageddon was the last full game to see a release back in 2011, and it didn’t exactly set the world on fire.
Still, the fact it’s called Evolution seems to indicate that we’re looking at something of a major kick up the arse for the brand, which is no bad thing.
Red Faction was originally released on the PlayStation 2 and PC back in 2001, and was followed by Red Faction II a year later. Beyond the spin-off Red Faction: B.E.A.S.T., the franchise didn’t show its face again until 2009’s Red Faction Guerrilla, and went underground following the launch of the aforementioned Armageddon.
In fact, Armageddon failed to drum up some decent sales, resulting in THQ ditching the series from its lineup; the publisher then went bankrupt just over a year later. Deep Silver later acquired developer Volition from the ashes of THQ, although Red Faction wasn’t part of the deal. However, Nordic Games (later THQ Nordic) purchased the Red Faction IP in 2013, and in February last year also snapped up Deep Silver.
In other words, there’s still a chance that Red Faction may yet make a comeback from original developer Volition, as they’re now part of the THQ Nordic umbrella.
