Report: Resident Evil 7 to be announced at E3 2016, will go back to its horror roots

Capcom will announce the next chapter in the multi-million selling Resident Evil franchise at E3 in Los Angeles next month.

That’s according to Dr. Serkan Toto, the CEO of Japanese video games industry consultancy, Kantan Games, who wrote on Twitter (via Gematsu) that Resident Evil 7 is in development and will apparently go back to the series’ horror roots.

Described as a “clean slate” for the venerable franchise, the game’s developer has apparently hired Jordan Amaro for the project, a designer who previously worked on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and P.T.

Rumors of Resident Evil 7 have been doing the rounds for a good while now, although what gives this latest one credence is that we know Capcom is gearing up to release two major titles by March 31, 2017. One of these is project to sell four million copies, too.

In addition, the Japanese publishing giant also said that it is preparing a full-scale assault for the Resident Evil series later in the year, which sounds like it might be planning to release an all-new title.

Regardless, Capcom has a few things up its sleeves this year for Resident Evil, including high-definition ports of Resident Evil 4 and 5 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, plus the spin-off title Umbrella Corps. In addition, the company is also working on a full-fledged remake of Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil was released on the PlayStation back in March 1996, and celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year.
