The release of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie has unsurprisingly had a knock-on effect on the sales of the video game series, with Resident Evil 2 Remake in particular heavily benefitting from a sales boost in wake of the film’s release.
That’s according to Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics, who stated during a Substack post a few days ago that Cregger’s horror flick achieved “the biggest opening in the 24-year history of Resi films.” Data added that Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake saw a 64% and 54% sales boost, respectively, on the back of the movie. “On Steam, the same movie effect is much milder +11% to +14%,” added Elliot.
“Resident Evil 2’s remake jumped +48% in daily players across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC,” he continued, noting that RE2’s sales “nearly doubled on PS5” alone. Elsewhere, Resident Evil 3 Remake saw a 25% increase in daily players while Resident Evil 4 Remake’s daily users jumped 24%. Resident Evil Requiem also benefited from the movie knock-on effect, with player activity leaping 20%.
“Revenue-wise, [Requiem is] outpacing every other game in the franchise and will certainly leapfrog the Resident Evil 4 remake’s $600M+ when all is said and done,” Elliot stated. “Almost all the copy movement was on PlayStation,” he concluded.
Resident Evil 2 Remake was released for PS4, PC, and Xbox One in January 2019 and received a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version in June 2022. The game will arrive for Nintendo Switch 2 next month. Based on the original 1998 survival horror classic, Resident Evil 2 offers modernised controls and gameplay, using the over-the-shoulder view popularised by Resident Evil 4 while adding new locations and expanded narrative.
