Speaking during its latest financial report, Capcom has said that it expects Resident Evil 7: biohazard to sell four million copies at launch across PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One platforms.
The Japanese game maker describes the upcoming survival horror game as a “foundation title” and expects strong sales to continue for some time, thanks to the rise of digital distribution "producing revenue not limited to the next two fiscal years but into the long term as well."
Resident Evil 7 release date set for early next year
Resident Evil 7 is scheduled for release on January 24, 2017. The game takes place in the southern U.S., with gamers controlling newcomer Ethan as he explores a mysterious plantation for his missing wife. However, along the way he’ll have to survive against the malevolent Baker family and solve fiendish puzzles to uncover the truth behind his wife’s disappearance.
Unlike previous mainline entries in the venerated franchise, Resi 7 will take place entirely from a first-person perspective. Capcom has said that it aims to return to the series’ horror roots with the game, and indeed that seems to be the case as Resi 7 places greater emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving, eschewing the large-scale combat situations that we’ve seen in past games.
Players can give the game a test drive right now with the Resident Evil 7 demo, which is available to download via the PlayStation Store. Capcom has said that it plans to update the demo for a second time prior to Resi 7’s release, although when that will happen has yet to be confirmed.
Outside of Resident Evil 7, Capcom is also working on a full-fledged remake of 1998’s Resident Evil 2.
