Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer on Resident Evil: Veronica, has revealed during a Q&A at Summer Game Fest that the upcoming remake of 2000’s Dreamcast survival horror title will indeed be third-person, despite its trailer using a first-person view.
When asked if Resident Evil: Veronica would use first-person, third-person or a combination of both like Resident Evil Requiem, Hirabayashi-san replied, “It’s a third-person game.” Presumably, this means it will utilise the same over-the-shoulder perspective that the remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 employed.
Elsewhere, Hirabayashi also touched on what players can expect from Veronica in terms of what game it takes some cues from, noting it’s a “very unique” instalment in the franchise.
I think that Veronica… is a very unique entry into the Resident Evil series,, so to say what it’s close to, it’s very difficult. That said, Veronica takes place three months after Resident Evil 2. [Claire is] the same person – it’s not like she became a government agent in that time – [but] she has had some training from her brother so she may have more at her disposal. However, she gets sent into a very exemplary situation very quickly… perhaps closer to Resident Evil 2.
Resident Evil: Veronica take place in December 1998 and follows Claire as she travels to Europe looking for her brother, Chris, who is conducting his own investigation into Umbrella following the events of the original game. Claire ends up in Paris, but is captured and taken to Rockfort Island, a military and prison base owned by Umbrella that suffers an outbreak of the T-Virus, populating it with zombies and other bio-weapons.
The original version of Resident Evil – CODE: Veronica saw players controlling Claire for much of the game, although Chris was also playable for a decent chunk of the adventure, too. The game introduced the ability to dual-wield specific weapons and delved deeper into the origins of Umbrella with the introduction of the Ashford family.
Resident Evil: Veronica is slated for release in 2027 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
