A notice posted by Japanese retailer 7-Eleven heavily indicates that Sony is planning on giving the 80GB PlayStation 3 the chop in Japan, having previously discontinued the 20GB, 40GB and 60GB models in the region.
The note itself reads that pre-orders will crease for Black, White and Silver 80GB consoles from 10am on August 9. It goes on to say that the move is at the request of the manufacturer – in this case, Sony.
In addition to the above, the note also confirms that all in-store displays for the 80GB platform will be removed. While not an outright confirmation, it certainly seems as though the 80GB model isn’t planning on sticking around much longer. As a result, this would leave only the 160GB version for the Japanese market – unless, of course, Sony is planning on introducing yet another SKU.
Stay tuned.
