Ubisoft‘s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Codename Red will be the last entry in the multi-million selling series to adopt the RPG formula that began with Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2017.
That’s at least according to ResetEra known-it-all John Harker, who simply said, “RED’ll be the last of the Origins formula” in a post. Needless to say, take this with a pinch of salt for the time being.
For those unfamiliar with the series, Assassin’s Creed Origins was a major departure for the series up to that point, as it introduced a traditional RPG levelling system complete with XP, levelled enemies (everything from regular grunts to local wildlife had a level attached to them), a larger open-world to explore, ample side quests, and more.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla expanded on this template further, with players able to choose multiple dialogue options, embark on romances, and build their own settlement. Looting was a major emphasis in these games, with gear and weapons raising your stats depending on their quality.
This year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage is scaling things back considerably in favour of bringing the action back in line with the earlier games, with a smaller setting to explore and linear progression via storytelling. In other words, you won’t be killed by a chicken who happens to be two levels higher than you.
As for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, Ubisoft has only confirmed that it will take place in Japan, although rumours last week suggested it’ll ship in 2024.
