Keep your grain of salt ready, but also remember this is Ubisoft, we’re talking about. Any bad decision is seemingly possible.
A claim has been made by an independent French outlet Origami that the team at Ubisoft Montpellier who created Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown was disbanded after Ubisoft leadership rejected the team’s proposal for a sequel.
This doesn’t mean that Montpellier is being shuttered – at least that’s not what it looks like currently. Just that the development team is no longer all together assigned on one project, and have been scattered throughout the company.
The report continues that this decision came down to numbers, or lack thereof in the case of The Lost Crown, which is said to have missed its sale targets.
Out of all of Ubisoft’s releases in 2024, you could very easily look at the lineup and conclude that The Lost Crown is the most successful of Ubisoft’s titles this year.
It’s a critical darling that breathed new life into a franchise fans want to see more from, but Ubisoft hadn’t delivered on. Executed by a team of veteran developers who know what goes into making a good 2D platformer.
‘Disappointing’ would be an understatement, for how fans would feel should this rumour turn out to be true. 2024 has been filled with turmoil for Ubisoft, but it’s confusing (to say the least) to see the logic in how disbanding the one development team who delivered a universally beloved game would help.
