Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House has today commented positively on the potential of a revival for some of gamers’ best-loved PlayStation franchises – namely Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.
Speaking in an interview with English broadsheet ‘The Daily Telegraph’, PlayStation’s head honcho responded to a query posed by the interviewer who asked about the intrepid marsupial and dragon’s return in the face of Nintendo’s re-use of the same characters time-and-time again.
"This is very dangerous ground. In concept, it is something we’ve been thinking about and discussing, and this is a shift for us. We’ve started to say that maybe there isn’t anything wrong with going back and looking at characters that people still talk about, that were a big part of either their childhood or their youth. I definitely wouldn’t close the door on that,’’ said House.
The re-use of characters from the original PlayStation era hasn’t been commonplace for Sony over the past fifteen years – much to the annoyance of certain sects of the fan base. Following the rumours of Crash Bandicoot’s return right around the time of the PlayStation 4’s launch, it looks as if it’s all gaining traction once again; this time with his fire-breathing purple friend, too.
