Sabotage Studio, the studio behind two of the best retro-inspired indie titles in recent years between The Messenger and last year’s excellent Sea Of Stars has shared a small update on what’s next.
The coming Sea Of Stars DLC, titled Throes Of The Watchmaker, is now in full swing at the studio. A post shared on the Sea Of Stars Twitter account called the coming DLC “mysterious and wacky.”
It also featured a picture of the developers in a full studio meeting from November 2023, when the first pitch for what Sabotage is calling “Game 3” was made.
“Back in November the team gathered for Sabobo Summit where the DLC for Sea of Stars was pitched, along with the vision for ‘Game 3’
Work is going well with the mysterious and wacky DLC which has officially graduated from pre-production! Malevolent spectacle awaits…”
Hopefully there’s an announcement before the end of the year as to what the DLC’s release date will be.
Sabotage Studio’s focus with its first two titles were to take inspiration from classic titles and bring them into modern day.
With The Messenger, it tackled 2D-platforming Ninja Gaiden games of old. While also adding in a dash of Metroidvania, and an excellent amount of modern platforming mechanics.
Sea Of Stars went the route of an old school RPG, the likes of Golden Sun, Chrono Trigger and even Super Mario RPG.
It’ll be really exciting to see where they go next, whenever it does decide on a new project.
Perhaps they’ll try their hands at old shoot-em-up games, or a side-scrolling fighter. Whatever it is, Sabotage clearly works from a place of deep passion for the genres and styles the pick to emulate and improve on.
Whatever it is, it’ll be something to keep an eye on.
