Shadow the Hedgehog has been enjoying some renowned time in the limelight the past year or so, thanks to his inclusion in Sonic x Shadow Generations and the third Sonic movie. SEGA could be planning more for the moody hedgehog, as they’ve filed a new trademark for ‘Shadow the Hedgehog.’
Published on Chizai Watch earlier this week, the trademark is listed as Class 9 (game program) and Class 41 (education/entertainment), and mentions “computer programs downloadable via the internet.” Nothing has been revealed about any plans for a new Shadow the Hedgehog game, but the filing could mean anything; a remaster of the original PS2 title, or perhaps even a new instalment for the character.

As mentioned, Shadow has been enjoying something of a revival as of late, as 2024 was marketed as the Year of Shadow by SEGA, where he featured in various projects as previously mentioned. Notably, he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, who turned out to be a great choice as he was well received by fans.
Shadow the Hedgehog made his debut in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, but he received his own spinoff outing, the self-titled 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog for GameCube, PS2, and Xbox. While the game features platforming elements seen in the 3D Sonic games, Shadow’s outing is much more action-focussed, and is notable for its inclusion of firearms to fend off enemies. While it didn’t exactly become a critical darling, Shadow the Hedgehog ended up selling over two million units and has developed a cult following.
