Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden has revealed that he was responsible for bringing back Ratchet & Clank for the PS4, even though some folk within the company were not keen on the idea of seeing the dynamic duo make a comeback.
Speaking with HipHopGamer, Layden commented, “Look, I greenlit Ratchet and Clank on the PS4, and at the time, the sales and marketing people were going, ‘No one wants to play that old game Ratchet and Clank.” The former PlayStation executive used marketing data to sway other departments, “which I don’t really love too much of but this was useful,” that revealed 20% of fewer PS4 owners were aware of the franchise.
“So 80% don’t know it,” he added. “So, for them, it’s a new game. It’s not an old game. And great game are always great.”

Ratchet & Clank was developed by Insomniac Games and released for the PS4 back in April 2016, and is a reimagining of the original PS2 title. You can read our full review here.
Layden was a veteran of PlayStation for more than 30 years and decided to leave the console manufacturer just ahead of the PS5 launch. Speaking in an interview earlier this year, Layden admitted that part of the reason he left Sony was due to the consoles then-pivot to live service games.
