There’s still a long way to go before the Q4 2018 Shenmue 3 release date, but things are progressing nicely with the action-adventure recently bringing a publisher on board with Deep Silver.
However, there’s still plenty of decisions to be made by developers Neilo and Ys Net who still haven’t made up their minds about numerous mechanics in the game as they continue to experiment with what works best.
Obviously, it needs to be different as the original Dreamcast games used the Dreamcast pad, which is a lot different to the DualShock 4 PS4 controller, lacking dual analog sticks.
Yu Suzuki is currently experimenting, wondering whether he should stick as close to the original configuration as possible or adapt things substantially for the PS4 controller.
"I haven’t made up my mind yet”, says Suzuki.” On one hand, I wanted to keep a similar configuration to the original game, but on the other hand, there are new trends in control that I’m considering. For the moment, I’m using the right trigger for running and the analog stick for camera control like the original. That’s current setup but I haven’t made up my mind yet."
The interview also sheds light on Shemnue 3 load times. With the technology now massively improved from the Shenmue and Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast, we can expect vastly improved loading times.
“This time, you’ll start in a large area which will require some initial loading, but compared to before the loading situation will be much better. It’s much faster now,” says Yu Suzuki.
In other Shenmue news, it’s rumoured that a Shenmue HD Collection is in the works after a retail listing appeared to leak the game for PS4 and Xbox One.
Shenmue 3 will be a PS4 exclusive at launch with an estimated release date of Q4 2018, and the developer is confident they will make that the game that players want,
