Shenmue 3 game world to expand with further Kickstarter stretch goals; QTEs will be ‘elaborate’

So, Shenmue 3 smashed through its Kickstarter goal; no surprise there. And now the dust has settled, and people’s jaws have been surgically sewed back on their skulls, there’s a few more details surfacing.

For instance we now know that Sony Computer Entertainment will be dipping its hands into its incredibly large pockets to help with the development of Shenmue 3. Secondly, we know that the QTEs (quick-time-events) that the series became renowned for will be overhauled to add an extra kick to this third instalment.

Speaking with Famitsu, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki spoke about his vision for QTEs.

“I’d like to present a new QTE. Something elaborate, yet easily playable by just about anyone,” says Suzuki. “Instead of simply winning by pressing buttons in a timely manner, I’d like to make something that will have people win fights by making correct judgements.”

Taking about the game world, Suzuki said that he has no plans to expand the world in Shenmue 3 to cater for even more characters.

“Everyone must be thinking that we’ll expand the open world more, but I’ve been deeply questioning whether or not to do that instead,” he said. “If we were to have 100 characters and split the budget among them, we’d be limited in terms of what we could do with each one; however, if we were to split that budget among just 10 characters, we could do a lot more with them.”

He goes on to say that the scope of Shenmue 3 and the ambition to add more fetures is only restricted by the size of the Kickstarter campaign.

“A stretch goal on Kickstarter will determine the expansion of the city,” he told the website.

Shenmue 3 was announced during Sony’s E3 2015 press conference this week as a Kickstarter funded project. It swiftly entered the Guinness Book Of Records as the fastest ever game to be crowd-funded. A release date and platforms have yet to be announced, though it will definitely be coming to PS4.
