Silent Hill f Team Explains Why The Game Places More Emphasis On Action Over Survival Horror

Silent Hill f Director Al Yang and series producer Motoi Okamoto have explained the game’s focus on more action-oriented gameplay was the result of a conscious decision not to repeat Silent Hill 2, as well as to attract newcomers to the franchise.

Speaking with Game*Spark, Yang stated that the team wanted to make the action elements stand out with Silent Hill f, as not to simply recreate Silent Hill 2 over again. Okamoto-san added that this has allowed Konami to potentially attract player who had never played a Silent Hill game before.

We didn’t want to end up recreating Silent Hill 2 over and over again, and we were aware that there was no reason to keep making clones of it. So, in order to avoid repeating what previous major titles did, we decided to make the action stand out more.

The Silent Hill series isn’t considered a game that has entertaining action per se, but as we’re opening our doors to new players, we began to wonder what it would be like if we added more of those elements into the game. Challenging action games are gaining popularity among younger players nowadays, so I believed that if we implemented such elements into the game, it would resonate well even with people who are new to the series.

Speaking in a separate interview recently, the game’s writer confirmed that Silent Hill f will feature five unique endings and a New Game Plus mode, the latter of which will include new bosses and story developments.

Silent Hill f doesn’t actually take place in the picturesque, fog-bound town as you would expect of a new entry in the series, but rather, is set during the 1960s in the fictional Japanese setting of Ebisugaoka. Much like Silent Hill, this town has become shrouded by a mysterious fog, with Hinako finding herself battling against grotesque creatures and solving brain-teasing puzzles as she battles to survive.

Silent Hill f is scheduled for release on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on September 25, 2025.
