Tequila Works, the studio behind games like Rime, Gylt, and Song Of Nunu: A League Of Legends Story has filed for insolvency.
Reported by GamesIndustry.Biz, a statement from the studios recently appointed general manager Térence Mosca says that “prolonged market conditions” are what has led to this decision.
The Madrid-based studio suffered layoffs and cancelled an unannounced project just last month, though clearly those cuts didn’t provide the quick financial fix the studio needed to keep things going.
Mosca has since stepped up to the role of general manager after the studios founders stepped down.
Mosca said that he was “proud of what [the team] has accomplished together,” and that “since its founding in 2009, Tequila Works’ game development philosophy has always focused on ‘creating things with gusto.'”
He also added that the studio’s focus now will be “doing everything we can to provide support and guidance to our teams during this difficult time.”
Back in January, Riot announced it would layoff 11% of staff, and shut down Riot Forge, its indie publishing label that it established to create spin-off titles from Riot’s biggest IPs, namely League Of Legends.
Song Of Nunu, which was published by Riot Forge, released days after that announcement, and seemingly left Tequila Works out to dry.
It’s unfortunate to see a 14-year old studio see its end in this way, and hopefully the developers impacted at Tequila Works will be able to land on their feet.
