Sonic Generations speeding into stores this holiday season

SEGA’s stapled-gunned a holiday 2011 release date to its nostalgia-coated platform romp Sonic Generations.

Due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Generations is billed as the “definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new,” and forms part of the series’ 20th anniversary celebrations – the inaugural Sonic the Hedgehog released back in 1991, in case you didn’t know.

When a mysterious power ushers the appearance of time holes throughout Sonic’s homeland, the spiky speedster finds himself hurtling back through time, bumping into a few surprises from his past.

As such, the game offers players the chance to hop into the sneakers of old school 90s Sonic or his modern-day counterpart as our heroes set out to rescue their friends and find out who’s behind the ordeal.

Players swill race through three defining eras from the blue hedgehog’s illustrious career, with Generations featuring HD incarnations of classic environments playable from both 2D and 3D perspectives.

In terms of moves, retro Sonic will come equipped with his iconic Spin Dash and Spin Attack, while the modern incarnation will be able to whip out the likes of the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost.

Stay tuned for more on Sonic Generations as we get it.
