SEGA and Paramount Pictures have announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has now surpassed the original film’s worldwide box office takings.
The sequel, which adds Tails and Knuckles to the equation, has now grossed $331.64 million worldwide, beating the original’s $319.71 million. The news comes following confirmation that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had become the highest-grossing video game movie in North America.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Sonic and chums battling against Dr. Robotnik, who makes his comeback after being stranded on the Mushroom planet at the end of the first movie. The film borrows elements from Sonic 3’s plot, with the evil scientist fooling Knuckles into helping him get his hands on the Master Emerald.
