SEGA and Paramount Pictures have announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has now surpassed the original film’s worldwide box office takings.
The sequel, which adds Tails and Knuckles to the equation, has now grossed $331.64 million worldwide, beating the original’s $319.71 million. The news comes following confirmation that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had become the highest-grossing video game movie in North America.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Sonic and chums battling against Dr. Robotnik, who makes his comeback after being stranded on the Mushroom planet at the end of the first movie. The film borrows elements from Sonic 3’s plot, with the evil scientist fooling Knuckles into helping him get his hands on the Master Emerald.
Paramount has already announced that it is working on a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie, as well as a TV series spin-off focussing on Knuckles.
Meanwhile, the video game series is receiving two new entries this year: Sonic Origins, a collection of classic Sonic titles for modern platforms, and the all-new Sonic Frontiers. Both games are in celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary.
