Sony announces cloud music service for PS3

Sony today officially announced a cloud-based digital music service heading to the PlayStation 3 later this year. At IFA in Berlin, Sony announced that Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity is heading the PS3 and other Sony devices.

Users will have access to millions of songs stored and synchronized through the cloud and accessed via PS3, BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, Blu-ray Home Theater systems and VAIO computer, using a single account and reducing any digital file clutter. According to the official European PlayStation Blog, we should soon hear more details, including exactly when and in which countries the service will be available.

“We are excited to offer our customers high quality, cloud-based entertainment experiences across many of Sony’s network-enabled devices,” said Kazuo Hirai, President of Networked Products & Services Group, Sony Corporation. “Services ‘powered by Qriocity’ will revolutionize the way that users play, listen, watch, share, communicate, learn, discover and create their digital entertainment content.”

Rumors have been floating around the web about a new music service, and it appears those rumors were accurate. According to Sony’s press release, Music Unlimited will be available on PS3 later this year in Europe and on Sony’s handheld devices soon thereafter. It’s unclear if this service is heading to North America.
