In an attempt to gain a profit, Sony intends on cutting around 10,000 jobs throughout all of its global department.
The Nikkei business daily, among other media speculations, said that Sony’s decision to cut this many jobs comes in part because of weak television sales and overall financial losses; Sony has not confirmed any of these speculations.
Kazuo Hirai, newly-appointed CEO of Sony, is holding a press conference on Thursday to cover a lot of these figures and reasonings. Sony has begun taking steps by announcing its plans to sell its chemical unit and merge LCD panel operations with Toshiba and Hitachi. yoko Yasukouchi, Sony’s spokeswoman, announced that these changes alone could affect around 5,000 employees.
Financially speaking, Sony reported a $2.1 billion loss for last years’ final quarter. Hopefully with the upcoming meeting, Hirai and his affiliates can work out some of Sony’s financial issues.
