After announcing that the PS5 has shipped 7.8 million units since the console’s launch Sony followed up that financial news with an investor call saying that they don’t expect PS5 supply to achieve much.
Transcribed by VGC, Sony’s CFO said that they are considering a number of solutions to help it cope with the shortage of hardware components globally. “As I said earlier, we’re aiming for more sales volume than the PS4 [during year 2]. But can we drastically increase the supply? No, that’s not likely,” Hiroki Totoki said.
He then follows up with “the shortage of semiconductors is one factor, but there are other factors that will impact on the production volume. So, at present, we’d like to aim at second-year sales of 14.8 million, which was the second year of PS4.”
Ultimately, this isn’t surprising to hear for many of us, but it is nonetheless disappointing as PS5 consoles are still in high demand and selling out almost everywhere. But, it looks like if you are trying to get one you are going to have a hard time for the next 12 months or so.
Elsewhere today, Sony revealed that they are set to increase investment in first-part games over the next year, with the company expecting first-party game sales to increase in the coming year.
The PS5 is available now.
