Sony’s announcement that the PlayStation 4 would be priced at $399 ($100 below the Xbox One) aligned with recent rumors and was met with widespread positive reaction. In an interview with GameStop, Sony’s Worldwide Studio head Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the company is currently "very happy" with its current pricepoint, but is open to "many" changes in the future and the possibility of having a subsidizd model.
"We are interested to explore many different sections to [understand] what feels most comfortable in purchasing the PS4," said Yoshida. "But initially, we are pretty much focused on getting the right price. And we are very happy with the price."
Sony is put in a unique situation at the onset of this generation. While it could offer a cheaper, subsidized model much like Microsoft currently does with the Xbox 360, the PS4’s lower pricepoint means that Sony may easily get away without any such arrangement. For those who consider the $399 price tag to be too high, however, this news indicates that a cheaper model could be released in the near future.
