Sony explains why it delayed PS VR to fall 2016

Sony was forced to delay the release of PlayStation VR to fall 2016 due to the need to manufacture additional units in wake of increased sales projections.

Speaking with Nikkei (via GameSpot), Masayasu Ito, Sony’s Executive Vice President, explained that the console maker was unable to meet its initial target of releasing the headset in the first half of 2016, as it wouldn’t have had sufficient stock available for launch.

Elsewhere, Ito-san teased that the virtual reality gaming device could come to PC at some point down the line. He also revealed that Sony hopes to ship 1-2 million PS VRs by the end of the calendar year.

Sony announced at GDC a few weeks back that PS VR will be released in October 2016 priced at $399/£349. The company hopes to have around 50 titles out by the end of the year, and has confirmed that over 230 developers are currently producing games for the device.

PS VR will be competing directly with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, although Sony’s headset is significantly cheaper than both of its rivals.
