A patent for an eSports betting platform has been filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which details a system that allows user stop bet currency β including Bitcoin β on digital goods, with a learning machine determine the odds.
While the patent was filed by Sony in 2019, it’s only just been published. From the look of things, it could allow for betting on live matches, such as fighting game tournaments including EVO, which Sony recently acquired. The patent reveals that betting odds for punters spectating would be determined by using the past histories of players/eSports teams.
Elsewhere, it also reveals the ability to access game data to support betting. βFor example, video may be searched to identify where in the video a virtual grenade has the possibility of killing one, two, or three characters.β
The patent also mentions the ability to bet against friends or other spectators, with users able to send bet proposals to others via a predetermined list, such as the next character to take a hit. It’s also indicated that spectators can choose their own odds, or those determined by the system itself.

Of course, it’s worth pointing out that patents do not necessarily mean that something is in the works, so this could never actually materialise into a functioning system.
