Sony Generates At Least $2.3 Billion Selling First-Party Games On PC & Xbox

Sony Interactive Entertainment is reported to have pulled in a staggering $2.3 billion by selling its first-party titles on formats other than PlayStation, according new data provided by the company.

The hardware manufacturer now has a segment for its PlayStation division to measure revenue for ‘Other Software,’ which is described as “revenue from sales of first-party titles, including add-on content, on platforms other than PlayStation consoles.” And it seems this is working out well for Sony, as it has pulled in at least $2.37 billion by selling first-party content on the likes of PC and Xbox.

Sony in the last few years has released a number of major titles across PC, including Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, God of War Ragnarok, Ghost of Tsushima, and others. Meanwhile, MLB The Show, which Sony considers a first-party franchise, is now available on Xbox formats, and its efforts with Bungie are obviously multiformat releases, including the upcoming Marathon. Helldivers 2 also saw an Xbox release last summer.

Microsoft obviously has been more aggressive than Sony in this respect, as it has undergone a major shift in strategy where tentpole franchises such as Gears of War, Forza Horizon, and Fable are available (or soon will be) on PS5. Even Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original 2001 shooter, is going multiplatform later this year.

Sony announced during its latest earnings results earlier this week that the PS5 has now shipped over 92 million units worldwide since its launch in November 2020.
