Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly started adding a label on PS5 consoles that warns consumers of its plans to stop production of physical game discs in January 2028.
Spotted by X content creator Behind the Games, the label reads as follows:
IMPORTANT NOTICE: From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.
Sony announced last month that it will be stopping production of PlayStation game discs in January 2028, although anything released before that window can still be released on disc. The decision caused widespread criticism online from PS5 owners, and also prompted a number of industry heavyweights to respond, including ex-PlayStation chairman Shawn Layden, who suggested that “it’s just too prohibitively expensive to stamp out discs.” Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, also expressed his disappointment over Sony’s decision.
Speaking during a Q&A with investors following its latest financial results in late July, Sony CFO Lin Tao finally broke the company’s silence on the subject, acknowledging ‘strong views‘ from consumers but made it clear Sony won’t be changing its mind.
